If you are visiting Philadelphia, there are a number of day trips that are possible. Most of these destinations are within a two hour drive and several are accesible via rail
The Jersey Shore
Depending on which beach you want to visit, you are about an hour and a half to two and a half hours away by Car. Cape May is a beautiful Victorian town with great restaurants and bed and breakfasts. There are also great restaurants.
Just north of Cape May you will find The Wildwoods with amusement parks and some great Doo Wop architecture.
Atlantic City is accessible by rail from Philadelphia as well as by auto. In addition to the boardwalk, there is the glitter of the casinos with their array of entertainers.
You can find charter and party boats in most of the shore towns with notable fleets operating out of Cape May and Barnegat.
Gettysburg
One of the great deciding battles of the Civl War was fought less than two hours from Philadelphia in the town of Gettysburg, Pa. It is an easy trip on the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Philadelphia
Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
Lancaster County is home to the Pennsyvlania Dutch Community. It is an area of rolling farmland that is worked without modern equipment. There is a great Pennsylvania Railroad museum and train ride in the town of Strassburg. Other attractions in the area include:
Dutch Wonderland is an amusement park in the heart of the Dutch Country.
Hershey Pa - Hershey is the home of Milton Hershey and the headquarters of the Heshey Chocolate Company. Hershey Park is a major amusement park and the Hershey zoo is also worth a visit.
The Poconos
Pennsylvania's Poconos region offers opportunities for year round outdoor sports. Many towns now have casinos which have brought entertainers to the region. The closest ski areas are less than two hours on the northeast extension of the Pennsylvania turnpike. There are also several large lakes for boating and fishing.
New York City
NYC is about two hours North of Philadelphia via I-95 with it's broadway shows, cultural exhibits and nightlife. You can also take Amtrak to Grand Central Station from Philadelphia.
