Why should I visit Philadelphia? Philadelphia is one of the older cities in the United States. It was founded by William Penn in the 1600's. The city played a crucial role during the Revolutionary War and the framing of the United States Constitution. The area is rich in history and culture with dozens of major museums, theaters and cultural centers. What other major cities and regions are near Philadelphia? New York City, The Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Gettysburg, Atlantic City, Cape May and the Baltimore-Washington are all within about two to three hours of Philadelphia. Where is the best place to stay for tourists? Most people visiting Philadelphia to visit the historical sites will probably want to stay in center city. What are some of Philadelphia's Nicknames? Philadelphia is often known simply as Philly.
